If you’re blaming yourself for not being your “perfect weight,” stop. It’s not your fault. Rather, the way our bodies are programmed to handle stress is the problem. Stress is a double whammy for weight – it increases our appetites and leads to overeating or poor food choices, then makes our bodies hold on to the fat. The solution is not extreme dieting, which causes more stress, but knowing how to stop the stress reactions.

STRESS, THE NOT-SO-SILENT SABOTEUR
Stress affects weight both physiologically and psychologically.

When you’re under stress, your digestion is impaired and you can’t receive the nourishment from the food you eat. Once the effects of adrenaline wear off, cortisol, known as the “stress hormone,” stimulates your appetite to replenish your food stores.

Excess cortisol also slows down your metabolism, because your body wants to maintain an adequate supply of glucose to deal with the next “threat.”

The disruption of cortisol secretion during the “fight or flight” response may not only lead to weight gain, but it can also put that weight exactly where you don’t want it – in your belly. Studies have shown that stress and elevated cortisol tend to cause fat deposits in the abdominal area, which is strongly related to Syndrome X, the cluster of risk factors associated with heart disease.

When under stress, doesn’t your willpower go out the window? Most people are driven to eat comfort foods when stressed out, even if they’re not hungry. And comfort foods are usually high-fat, sugary or salty foods. You may be eating whatever is within reach to fill an emotional need, or cruising to the closest fast food window because you have no time to shop and cook a healthy meal.

You’ll find out which of your chakras is under stress, and learn the best foods, relaxation techniques, yoga and exercise to balance your chakras and have a vibrant, healthy and beautiful New Year and New You.

KEEP THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT OF GOOD HEALTH

Screen Shot 2017-11-28 at 11.34.28 AMHow can you get the most out of the holidays without stressing out?

The hectic holiday season can leave many people feeling exhausted and anxious instead of merry and bright. Stress is also the top cause of taxing all your chakras, your immune system and  your health. So, I’d like to share the stress-busting techniques I write about in The Chakra Energy Diet, now available in paperback by the way.

TAKING CHARGE OF YOUR STRESS

Whether you look to modern science or ancient wisdom, stress is seen as the root of dis-ease. According to the ancient Hawaiian Huna philosophy taught by Serge Kahili King, PhD, stress plays a part in all health problems. In fact, according to Dr. King, stress can cause tension at the physical, mental, emotional and/or spiritual level, leading to inhibited energy flow and, ultimately, illness.

There are many ways, such as yoga and meditation, that I use on a daily basis to relax my body and mind, as well as the following “instant healing” techniques taught by Dr. King.

What do I do first when feeling stressed out? I used to reach for a bag of potato chips until I was taught:

“Don’t eat when upset or angry.” Instead, I…

Take a Break and Breathe

Try this combination of breath and focused attention called Piko-piko breathing…

Piko-piko is a special Hawaiian breathing technique that simultaneously relaxes and energizes the body,” says Dr. King. Using shamanic techniques and chakra colors, imagine breathing in bright yellow energy from the sun into your Solar Plexus or navel area and breathing out your stress. Or pull in inspiration from the heavens, visualizing violet or white light coming in with the breath through the Crown Chakra, and exhale your stress by breathing it out with awareness at the bottom of your feet.

“I know, I know, this seems almost too simple,” says Dr. King. “But it does work.”

Relieve Mental Stress

To relieve mental stress, pay more attention to what you like, rather than what you don’t. Criticism, whether of yourself or something else, creates mental stress and then tension in your body, explains Dr. King.

First of all, don’t knock your body. Praise it for every step it takes in the right direction. Try self-love, rather than self-criticism, when you look in the mirror, even after enjoying those holiday treats. Who would put up with a critical person barraging them all day with their negativity?

Push aside that critical voice in your head, and instead, focus on something you like about yourself – you’re a good person, with your own unique style and taste.

A good morning practice, when you first look in the mirror, is to spend a full minute focusing on everything you like about yourself…telling yourself out loud everything you like about yourself. This is a quick mental stress reliever I learned from Dr. King called “Saturation Praise.”

Don’t Push Down Uncomfortable Emotions

On the emotional level, anger is often tied to inflammatory processes which damage the body, one of only many reasons to practice forgiveness. If something is gnawing at you, rather than trying to calm yourself with food, decide to let it go.

Dr. King taught me a simple anger-release technique: Place one hand on an area of your body where you feel tension or inflammation, and point the other hand toward the earth, which can absorb your angst, and say, “Whatever this is related to, I release it and let it go forever” until the tension and pain eases.

Undigested emotions can lead to your body holding on to weight as well as anger or fear. Release your emotions and stop what’s eating you. There are many reasons to forgive (even if you can’t forget) transgressions – because anger only hurts YOU.

Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.” ~ Buddha

You’re Already Complete and Connected

On the spiritual level, tension can come from feeling isolated or separate, and the antidote can be as easy as meditating. Dr. King suggests trying a nalu meditation, focusing for a minute on something beautiful. You will soon feel a sense of relaxation come over you and a greater connection to spirit, your higher self, or God (work with your own beliefs about this).

Once you’re in that relaxed state, it’s a good time to express gratitude for the good in your life or to ask for inspiration. When you have ideal health or reach your perfect weight, what would you like to achieve and share with the world?

Embracing the “Relaxation Response”

As you address your stress, and practice relaxation responses, your metabolism will improve, it will be easier to make nourishing food choices vs. struggling with willpower, and your body will look and feel better.

Relaxing your stress responses will allow you to better digest your food, helping you keep your waistline even during the holidays.

DO YOU FEEL ENOUGH LOVE IN OUR WORLD? Balancing the #HeartChakra

LOVEI think we can all agree what the world needs now is love. You feel love when you give love. And you need an open, balanced Heart Chakra to be the compassionate, loving person that is the real you. Following is an excerpt from The Chakra Energy Diet: The Right Food, Relaxation, Yoga & Exercise to Look and Feel your Best! on the Heart Chakra:

HEART CHAKRA ISSUES

If you agree with more than 3 or 4 of the following statements, you may want to look at ways to heal your Heart Chakra…

  1. I’m tired from putting others ahead of myself.
  2. I find it hard to forgive or let go of hurt feelings.
  3. I’m very empathic – feeling other’s feelings.
  4. My heart has been broken in the past.
  5. I have heart and/or lung problems.
  6. I feel numb and a loss of passion.
  7. Connecting with friends or family helps relieve my stress.
  8. I don’t get enough hugs, kisses or massages.
  9. I often get heartburn after eating.
  10. I don’t really like vegetables.
  11. Relationship problems cause me to overeat.

All healing is achieved through the magic of love. We can all benefit by releasing the tension that blocks our healing energy from flowing. Start with self-love, accepting and praising your body and mind for being – yes, just for being here for you, allowing you to be part of life. Go from there, and do Saturation Praise (telling yourself out loud what you love about yourself) for a minute every day – the more you learn to love yourself, the more you will be able to do what’s best for your body, and to show love and compassion to others.

The Fourth Chakra: Located at the center of your chest, the Heart Chakra is associated with the heart and lungs. If your Heart Chakra is blocked or imbalanced, you may experience physical issues with these organs, such as hypertension or respiratory ailments, or feel pain in the upper back and shoulders. You may feel emotional insensitivity, sorrow, depression, and resentment, and develop a dependency on smoking cigarettes or marijuana.

When the Heart Chakra is balanced, you are able to feel love, openly giving and receiving it. You are able to be compassionate without taking on other people’s feelings. You can let go of sadness, release old resentments, forgive yourselves and others, and move forward with emotional empowerment.

The Heart Chakra is the bridge between the lower three chakras – the Root Chakra which relates to our safety and security; the Sacral Chakra, which relates to our creativity and sexuality; the Solar Plexus Chakra, which is the base of our personal power and identity; and the upper three chakras – the Throat Chakra, which is associated with speaking our truth; the Third Eye Chakra, which opens us to our higher knowing and intuition; and the Crown Chakra, our connection to spirit.

Leafy greensHeart Chakra Healing Foods

While the first three chakras are fed by protein, fats and carbohydrates, the Heart Chakra is balanced through phytochemicals or macronutrients, especially those in green vegetables. The rising energy imparted by leafy greens, for instance, feeds our expansion, growth and opening in all directions, like the feeling of love and a willingness to give of ourselves.

Foods, especially that share colors with the chakras, carry vibrations that can activate or balance your chakras. So, nourish your Heart Chakra with the many GREEN vegetables – from kale, spinach, chard, collard, dandelion and mustard greens, to lettuce and sprouts of all kinds, and nourishing and health-protective cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, brussels sprouts and cauliflower. There’s also bok choy, cabbage, arugula, green peas and peppers, leeks and green onions, watercress, zucchini, and celery.

Take a stroll through your local Farmer’s Market and appreciate the abundance of green veggies and choose your favorites, then open up and try some new ones. Ask how to best prepare them to savor their delicious flavors.

Also, include green fruit in your diet, from green apples, pears, grapes and kiwi, to that best salad ingredient of all – avocados.

Heart Chakra Healing Activities

Use this general affirmation or blessing while cooking and before eating for the Heart Chakra:

“May this food bless and nourish my body and make me more loving and compassionate.”

You can strengthen the healing effect of your food by adding in some green veggies at each meal, for instance, adding some leafy greens to your morning juice or smoothie, or green peppers in your omelet, having a large salad at lunch, and steaming broccoli or zucchini for your side dish at dinner. Make your meal with love and gratitude, for the people who grew your food, to the people you will share it with.

We often overeat to fill a feeling of emptiness or lack of love. If sharing food is one of the major ways your mother has expressed her love to you, or you to your family, think of other ways to feed the longing of your own heart, rather than with food. Instead, pamper yourself with a massage or social activity, or reach out to others through volunteer work.

Exercising with others is recommended for the Heart Chakra. Join in a team sport, an aerobics or spin class at the gym, take a walk with a friend or partner, play catch with your children, and be sure to take a yoga class.

Circle 3Heart Chakra Yoga Poses

I like to open up Heart Chakra energy in the chest by doing the Circle of Joy sequence; and also with the Cobra Pose.

The Heart Chakra will also be energized by the Fish Pose, the head-to-knee Forward Bend and the Head of Cow pose.

Heart Chakra Visualization

In your mind’s eye, see a person who may have hurt you and caused your heart to be blocked to the flow of love and compassion. Imagine sending them blessings as you throw them a ball in a game of catch. See if they throw it back. If not, surround the game of catch or relationship with a green glow, sending that person love and forgiveness, and through magical thinking, have them throw the ball back and forth with you. And then catch yourself smiling.

It’s not hard to let go and forgive someone…wrap that person who has caused you pain in bright green light, cleansing and healing the situation. Release yourself and them from any negative connections, only keeping the good. Let go of anger to have space for love to grow. Now, with love and compassion, envelop yourself and your whole life experience in healing green light.

The Chakra Energy Diet is available on Amazon Kindle for download to any device. Here’s to balance, health, and always, love.

Scrumptious Summer Salad for Balancing the Root Chakra

Screen Shot 2017-06-18 at 12.20.46 PMHealing The Root Chakra – the All-Important First Step to Balance

If your Root Chakra is out of balance, you may feel all alone in the world, or like you don’t have solid ground to stand on.

Connection is key in healing the Root Chakra… connection with family, friends, nature, and your higher self.

What kind of “connecting” do you need to heal? Those with Root Chakra imbalances often feel estranged from their family or society in general, unrooted, and ungrounded.

I often recommend gardening to ground oneself, and planting root vegetables is probably the ultimate healing activity for the Root Chakra.

How are your connections with others? If you love helping others, practice the act of receiving for a change, and this will help heal this chakra.

If you usually let others take care of you, share some wisdom, some kind words, be someone else’s sounding board, or make a meal for a friend to build a stronger connection.

It’s a sizzling hot summer day at my house today, so I’m making this light lunch for a few friends. Let me know if you think this should be included in my upcoming CHAKRA COOKBOOK.

This can be a green-free salad (except for the parsley) or you can add chopped raw spinach or other greens as well. If you want added protein, feel free to add walnuts or some crumbled goat cheese. The main ingredients are still organically-grown root veggies – beets and carrots, and red in color – beets, apples and umeboshi vinegar (found in the Asian section of health food stores), all healing to the Root Chakra:

Scrumptious Summer Salad of Beets, Carrots and Apples

1 lb. beets, peeled and cut in matchsticks

2 large carrots, peeled and cut in matchsticks

1 red-skinned apple, cut in small bite-sized pieces

1 bunch flat-leaf parsley, cilantro or baby spinach leaves

3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

2 T. umeboshi plum vinegar

Black pepper to taste

Toss all salad ingredients together right before serving.

Note: A food processor that has either a julienne blade or large shredding blade makes prep of this salad a breeze.

I hope you enjoy this scrumptious salad and share it with your family or friends – as a main course or side dish. Pay attention to the beauty of the colors and flavors provided by nature, stay in the moment, and notice how grounded and connected you feel.

When balancing your chakras, it’s all-important to start with a focus on the Root Chakra – it will generate great results for you.

Color your World GREEN for #EarthDay

Abundance

Happy Earth Day – a great time to replace products that contain toxic chemicals you may be ingesting, bringing into your home, or spraying on your lawn. They not only effect your personal health and chakras, but the balance of our entire ecosystem.

Since the EPA doesn’t guarantee us safe perfumes, makeup, pesticides or cleaning products, you need to become your own expert on what to use and what not to use to heal both yourself and the earth.

Be proactive and choose safer products for yourself and the environment now, with these tips…

ORGANIC FOOD

Organic produce is the smart choiceLike I explain in The Chakra Energy Diet, eating organic food will reduce your exposure to pesticides and even provide you with more nutrients in your fruits and vegetables. Check the EWG’s Dirty Dozen list of which vegetables are most important to buy organic. They include lettuce, cucumbers, and leafy greens like kale, which can luckily be found in abundance at our local farmer’s markets.

By choosing local organic produce, you’ll also be supporting the health of farm workers and the soil and closing your wallet to growers who poison the groundwater, wildlife and everyone downwind of pesticide spraying.

SAFER PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS

Did you know that the chemicals in your favorite fragrance may be making you, your friends, coworkers and family sick? Not only are 95% of the chemicals used to make products “fragrant” derived from petroleum, but they are also neurotoxins and endocrine disrupters that eventually end up in our environment.

For example, a natural mineral sunscreen with a reflective barrier like zinc, in a fragrance-free base, is better for your skin and our coral reefs. The CDC reported that 97% of Americans are contaminated with oxybenzone, a widely-used sunscreen chemical linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage that may actually increase the signs of aging. And even trace levels of sunscreen chemicals can cause coral reef damage.

NON-TOXIC CLEANSERS

Choose safer cleaning products. The chemical cleaners under your sink can be a source of indoor air pollution that is worse than any pollution we experience outside. Commercial cleansers often contain concoctions of chemicals, many of which are toxic first to our bodies and then to the environment once they’ve gone down the drain.

For instance, your dish and laundry cleaners are often detergents, not soaps, and are derived from petroleum, are non-biodegradable, and contain phosphates that pollute the groundwater and ocean. Choose from the many new chemical-free alternatives, like Seventh Generation products, or the age-old cleaning standbys – vinegar, baking soda, Borax and Bon Ami.

Everyone likes fresh smelling laundry, right? Be aware that dryer sheets contain chloroform, camphor, ethylacetate and other hazardous ingredients. Instead, add a little baking soda to your wash water to soften and deodorize your clothes.

CHEMICAL-FREE GARDENS

A perfect lawn for your children is one without chemicals. If you think weed killers are non-toxic, think again. Roundup is now labelled as a “probable carcinogen” in California, based on the World Health Organization report on its toxicity. There are also many many other side effects from exposure to glyphosate and other herbicides, especially for our children, such as asthma, autism, allergies and ADHD. Research reported in the February 2013 issue of Toxicology showed that the secret “inactive” ingredients in Roundup, such as POE-15, may be even more toxic to human cells, and should also be regulated.

Do you want your children and pets to be playing on a lawn sprayed with dangerous chemicals, which they then track into your home? Or to have a backyard vegetable garden tainted with chemicals?

Why not just pull the weeds, mow or weed-whack them along with your grass, or use an infrared or flame weeder? If you do choose to spray, try using plain vinegar to kill weeds in your driveway or gravel path.

The ecosystem within and without are all connected – so let’s celebrate Earth Day by starting health-restoring practices for all.

#Gardening for the #RootChakra – Be Sure to Kill the Roots of Weeds without Killing Yourself – Try a #NatureZap

Root ChakraIn my book, The Chakra Energy Diet, I not only recommend foods to balance each chakra, but also activities.

Root Chakra Healing Activities: Gardening is the #1 activity I recommend for Root Chakra grounding AND for weight loss. The University of Utah did a study that agreed, showing that burying your hands in the earth can help you bury excess pounds as well. The researchers found that the average body mass index (BMI) of female gardeners was 1.84 lower than that of their non-gardening neighbors, or approximately 10 pounds less for a woman 5’ 5” tall. For men, the difference was even greater, so bend down and dig in the soil, guys. Male gardeners had an average BMI difference of 2.36, which translates to 16 lbs. less for a 5’ 10” physique.

These research results, reported in the American Journal of Public Health, showed that spouses of the gardeners also had lower BMIs, which was attributed to eating more fresh produce and possibly helping with pulling weeds and other gardening activities.

What About Weeds? If hand pulling weeds isn’t an option, there are many alternatives that can help you, without resorting to toxic herbicides. Protect your own health, the health of your children and pets, plus Mother Earth, by eschewing Roundup. In addition to now being classed a “probably carcinogen,” independent researchers have long known the many side effects of being exposed to Roundup whether in your GMO food or your yard.

A short excerpt: “Here’s everything we know that is being linked to the chemicals, all of the chemicals in Roundup, ADHD, because these chemicals act as neurological inhibitors, both in children and in fetuses, which means that it affects the way the brain develops. The neurons do not myelinate as they’re supposed to. That also causes autism. It’s been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, birth defects, brain cancer, breast cancer, other forms of cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, celiac disease, gluten intolerance, chronic kidney disease, colitis, depression, diabetes, heart disease, hypothyroidism, inflammatory bowel disease, liver disease, Lou Gehrig’s disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, and unfortunately I’m out of room to continue the rest of the list here. Those are all things that have been linked by studies to all of the chemicals in Monsanto’s Roundup.”
Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 10.54.36 AM

So, what do I use in my yard? Mostly, we mow our lawn with the weeds in it – they’re green and blend in with grass and it’s healthier for myself, my husband, my dog and most importantly, my child.

But because we have flower and vegetable beds that often get choked with weeds, I was excited to try the new tool being used by the American Air Force – the cordless NatureZap DE. It uses ultraviolet light to kill weeds without toxic chemicals, is battery operated so you don’t need smelly propane, you just point and several seconds and the weed is gone, all while being safe for people, places and pets.

I can grab the NatureZap DE anytime and zap any weeds that have popped up. It actually zaps down to the roots of the weed for permanent removal!

If you have good alternatives to using Roundup and other herbicides please share them in the comments, and if you’re looking for another solution, try the NatureZap DE available for sale on Amazon.

Here’s to the your health and the health of Mother Earth!
