If you’re blaming yourself for not being your “perfect weight,” stop. It’s not your fault. Rather, the way our bodies are programmed to handle stress is the problem. Stress is a double whammy for weight – it increases our appetites and leads to overeating or poor food choices, then makes our bodies hold on to the fat. The solution is not extreme dieting, which causes more stress, but knowing how to stop the stress reactions.

STRESS, THE NOT-SO-SILENT SABOTEUR
Stress affects weight both physiologically and psychologically. We’ve all experienced our stomachs do a flip-flop when we’re anxious. Ann Doherty, RN, MS, CDE (certified diabetes educator), explains during her “Art of Stress Management” workshops, just what stress can do to your stomach and the rest of your body.

Physiologically, when you’re under stress, your digestion is impaired and you can’t receive the nourishment from the food you eat. Once the effects of adrenaline wear off, cortisol, known as the “stress hormone,” starts signaling the body to replenish your food stores.

Cortisol is a hormone that stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy, and stimulates the release of insulin to maintain blood sugar levels. So, when stress causes your cortisol to surge, your appetite will be stimulated as well. Excess cortisol also slows down your metabolism, because your body wants to maintain an adequate supply of glucose to deal with the next “threat.”

The disruption of cortisol secretion during the “fight or flight” response may not only lead to weight gain, but it can also put that weight exactly where you don’t want it – in your belly. Studies have shown that stress and elevated cortisol tend to cause fat deposits in the abdominal area, which is strongly related to Syndrome X, the cluster of risk factors associated with heart disease.

Over millennia, our bodies have also been programmed to store up against famine… we’re biologically adapted to want more sugar and fat, which meant survival for our ancestors. But today, there’s no longer feast or famine like the hunter/gatherers encountered. And when they found food, it usually contained a high amount of nutrition and was low in calories. Our modern-day processed foods are often high in empty calories and low in nutrients, so we keep craving more and more.

When under stress, doesn’t your willpower go out the window? Most people are driven to eat comfort foods when stressed out, even if they’re not hungry. And comfort foods are usually high-fat, sugary or salty foods. You may be eating whatever is within reach to fill an emotional need, or cruising to the closest fast food window because you have no time to shop and cook a healthy meal.

BALANCE THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA WITH DYNAMIND


I recently got a review for my first book, The Chakra Diaries, in which the reader said she had a hard time visualizing the chakra meditations provided at the beginning of each section. I’ve met many people who are not visually oriented, who would like to be better able to visualize what they want, and improve their intuition, imagination and psychic abilities.

So, let’s do some Dynamind tapping for the Third Eye Chakra.

Through this chakra center, you can tune in to the higher self in order to receive guidance and realistically perceive and visualize the future. It vibrates with the energy of the color indigo.

Emotional or mental health issues include confusion, brain fog, aimlessness and an inability to see the big picture or separate fact from fiction. Physical health issues commonly associated with the Third Eye Chakra include headaches, sinus problems, vision problems, learning disabilities and nightmares.

When the Third Eye Chakra is balanced, you have the ability to think clearly and the ability to trust your own inner wisdom, along with an increase in your intuitive, telepathic  and psychic abilities, including clairvoyance or clear seeing.

USING DYNAMIND TO BALANCE THE THIRD EYE CHAKRA

Prayer1) FOCUS – Hold your hands out in a loose prayer-like position.

2) DECLARE – Say aloud the condition you’re feeling that you would like to change, e.g.,

“I can’t concentrate and that can change. I want that feeling to go away.”

“I have a sinus headache and that can change. I want that pain to go away.”

If you have no symptoms to release, you can use Dynamind to strengthen the Third Eye Chakra, with a declaration such as:

“I’m not as intuitive as I want to be. I want to live in the light, seeing and thinking clearly.”

Becca Chopra performing Dynamind.3) RELEASE – Tap 7 times on the center of your chest, then at the point between the thumb and forefinger of each hand, and on the top bone of your spine (the 7th cervical vertebra).

4) BREATHE – Direct your breath, inhaling with your attention on the crown of your head, exhaling with your attention below your feet.

Repeat until you feel the desired result.

     “Bon Jour, Blonde Goddess” read the subject line. Delete or open, that was the decision at my fingertips. Liking “goddess” rather than “dried up old crone,” I decided to open, hoping it wasn’t another offer for penile enlargement drugs at a discount. 

     The text didn’t disappoint. It described how the sender, whose return address was TantricOne, had dreamt of me the night before and had awoken in a tangle of sweaty sheets, his body having made a promise that his mind must fulfill. He knew how to write a love scene, describing in luscious detail how he had started kissing the tip of my perfect nose, pausing for the briefest caress at my full, sensuous lips down the slope of my silky white throat, into that heart throb of deep cleavage awaiting him between my bountiful breasts, skating the circle of creation that formed my navel, then tracing the contours of each heavenly hip bone before licking the smooth-downed valley of my stomach…. and then, he woke up.

     OK, that was me paraphrasing a two-page dreamscape from a master writer. Me, the owner of the dead second chakra, now had small drops of sweat pooling in my deep cleavage, tingles in the area below my smooth, flat stomach, and a shortness of breath that could only mean I was turned on or having my first hot flash.

      My assistant came in, looking over my shoulder in her nosy way, to remind me of my 10 am meeting, and I pressed “delete” before her eyes could focus on the sultry text on the screen.
Located at the lower abdomen, right at the cervix, the Sacral Chakra governs how we relate to others and the flow of our feelings and expression in art, music, dance and living. It is the seat of our sexuality, the pleasure chakra that turns us on and is considered by many to be the doorway into creation itself.

When this chakra is balanced, you can embrace creativity with open arms, whether it is expressed through dance, yoga, swimming, sex, singing praises to the Divine, painting to celebrate self-awareness, or cooking for your inner goddess.
